I was invited by the Tides Institute and Museum of Art to a Studioworks Residency in Eastport, Maine. Eastport sits only on the border between the U.S. and Canada, and but also on the border between sea and sky, land and sea, mountains and coast, city and country. So I conceived of a project that asked people to look—really look—at the sea and sky, building an intimate, daily, informed observation of the environment. I also wanted to address the communal nature of ideas about the environment, and the subjective nature of color.
