I was invited to live and work on the estate of Daniel Chester French, (best known for the Lincoln Memorial). I came to think of French as a bridge, between the pastoral America of the 19th century and the industrial America of the 20th, and to value the kind of democratic innocence in the accessibility of his imagery and themes...
