Jane Addams was the first American woman to win the Nobel peace prize, establishing, in 1897, the first Settlement house in an impoverished neighborhood in Chicago. Her work there led to efforts in public health and nutrition, education, racial justice, women's rights and the role of art as a connection to an immigrant's cultural heritage. To that end she established a ceramic studio at Hull House, where immigrant ceramic artisans from Mexico could continue their work
She also opened the doors of Hull House to people who came from all over he world to work along side her.
In this installation, I lined the parlor--where some of the arts and crafts classes were taught--with clay. The clay remained soft, allowing visitors to continue the Hull House tradition of "Making their mark"
