If These Things Could Talk:Object Stories
The Portland Art Museum AM has created an project called "Object Stories." that exists both in a museum gallery and on-line. The museum houses a photo- and audio-recording booth, where visitors discuss objects that are meaningful to them. The surrounding gallery showcases objects mentioned in the stories, and features computers so visitors can access all the archived recordings.
The museum invited me to create a project related to this archive. The result is "If These Things Could Talk" a project that explores the hidden lives of things in museum collections by casting the objects as storytellers. I chose to focus on domestic objects in the collection. The narratives illustrate how the shift from private use to public display transforms the value and function of artifacts.
