French kept up a wide correspondence with key figures in American Arts and Letters. In his study, I created an installation using his typewriter and books: The typewriter ribbon curls like ribbon in a frieze, around columns of books. The books form three distinct areas: 1) The set of Who's Who in America, as well as books by and about figures he knew ie, Emerson, Dickinson, Alcott-- 2) Volumes relating to the subjects of his sculpture (including the many volumes on Lincoln, and 3) Volumes relating to garden design, landscape design and nature
