Portfolios > Pedagogy: The Excavating History Class at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago

EXCAVATING HISTORY 2008
Excavating History was born out of solo projects I did in Chicago and Europe, projects that intervened in historic sites.
After doing the above projects, it occurred to me that these projects could be structured to reflect many voices working in collaboration. So I designed a class for the School of the Art institute of Chicago which functions as a workshop and culminates in an exhibition at an historic site. These exhibitions bring new, critical insights to our relationship to the stories that shape our lives and politics. Whose story gets told and who gets to tell it? What has been edited out, censored, forgotten? How can we imagine new futures?"

Excavating History Class projects have taken place at the Chicago Cultural Center and the Sullivan Center, and Pleasant Home/Farson-Mills Museum, and the Jane Addams Hull House Museum
