Detail, Excavating History Hull House, walls lined with terra cotta plasticine
Fingerprint by Fingerprint, detail
2010

Hundreds of residents passed though the Hull House, volunteering their time, energy and labor. They all left their mark. Thus the house was built by many, day by day, fingerprint by fingerprint.

Another aspect of the Hull house was a respect for art and craft (They ran a ceramic studio and a book bindery.) Keying off these two aspects of Hull House history, I lined the walls of Addam's parlor (where some art classes were held) with soft terra cotta--the clay is oil-based so it stays soft, allowing visitors to metaphorically leave their mark.
The detail shows the texture and marks on the walls
